Healthy Holiday Food Swaps

Image
With the holidays right around the corner it is easy to get overwhelmed with the amount of high fat foods, desserts, and alcoholic beverages that are being served at family gatherings or office parties. Although it can be tough to be health conscious during the holidays, here are some easy swaps you can make, while still enjoying your food.  TURKEY over Ham Turkey is a low-fat, lean protein food, while ham is high in sodium. If you want to further decrease your fat intake, you can remove the skin from the turkey. SWEET POTATOES over White Potatoes Sweet potatoes contain less calories than white potatoes. They are also high in Vitamin A, C, and Magnesium. Sweet potatoes can also be made with cinnamon, which has benefits such as decreasing triglycerides and cholesterol.  HERBS & SPICES over Salt Herbs and spices can be used to reduce sodium and fat in your cooking and are a good source of antioxidants. Easy and Budget Friendly Potato Leek Soup

I always love soup season. It is so easy to make pantry items or vegetables into a delicious, warm, and filling soup. Soup can be healthy and full of vitamins and minerals as well as fiber and protein. During the seasons, I like to buy fruits and vegetables that are the most inexpensive for the season. So, for the fall and winter, potatoes, leeks, onions, garlic, and carrots are pretty affordable! Traditionally, potato leek soup is made with only a few ingredients, but I like to pack it with as many vegetables as possible for optimal benefits!    This recipe is enough for I would say 4 people, but it could be enough for 5-6 if paired with additional sides. I intuitively eat, and when I cook for myself and maybe a couple friends, I will have enough left over for 1 or 2 more meals. This is my own personal recipe I have developed over the few times I have made this soup! It is a wonderful base to have that is easy to build upon.    Ingredients: ·  ...

Winter season = Soup season

Winter is soon to be upon us, and the sparkling snow will soon be making its debut. With the snow we tend to think about Christmas time, holidays, lights, family, and memories. However, with the snow comes the freezing cold that not everyone views as ideal. Did you know that during the winter our body’s need more of certain nutrients than when in the summer? Well it does and some nutrients are Vitamin C, B12, and E,   protein , Zinc, and Chromium. Therefore, why not make a soup that contains almost all of the nutrients you need to eat during the wintertime. This way you are getting your nutrients and you’re making sure you stay toasty and warm.       Many of these ingredients are simple household ingredients that you could already have on hand. With the weather being cold and roads being slippery not many people want to go to the grocery store as often. Therefore, making a soup with ingredients you may already have is the way to go. Another plus being you can ...

From Decreased Portions to Decreased Pounds

Image
I’m sure you’ve heard it before – portion control is the key to weight loss. But how do you know when your portions are too big? Portion sizes have increased drastically in the last several decades.   Fast food chains are drawing in customers in by supersizing meals for only a few cents extra and dine in restaurants are dishing out enormous meals right after filling your table with complimentary (and unlimited) items like bread or chips. These dining trends have led to confusion on what a portion should actually look like. How can you control your portion size and avoid unintentionally consuming excess calories? 1.                                Skip the Chips When dining out, avoid the bottomless bread and chips when they arrive at your table (which can save you hundreds of calories). 2.                     ...
