Chick-fil-a Sundays

Chick-fil-a is truly one of the best fast food restaurants out there (in my opinion anyway). And I’m gonna venture out and say that most would agree with me, considering it’s ALWAYS double wrapped around the building no matter what time of day it is. It’s definitely at the top of my list when it comes to eating fast food. The only problem is the days I typically want chick-fil-a, is on Sundays. I’m sure we’ve all been there, when you finally decide where you want to grab food at, then you realize it’s Sunday night and chick-fil-a is closed. Yes, this is a problem, but I think I have a new recipe that might fix your Sunday fried chicken cravings. This is a mock chick-fil-a sandwich I found on tik tok that I can attest tastes amazing and is actually pretty healthy. Instead of deep fat frying the chicken to get it crispy, we’re going to use corn flakes. It sounds crazy but trust me, its delicious. I made a few tweaks to the original tik tok recipe but overall, it’s pretty similar. Here’

Gardening for the Win

       With inflation putting a pinch on already expensive food produce, many folks are left comprising the quality of their diet in order to spare the loose change in their wallet. While we, as dietitians, recognize the importance and nutritional benefits that any food item has to offer, eliminating certain produce does not ensure adequate nutrition status.  An easy way around this dilemma is to make a quick trip to your neighborhood Home Depot and purchase some dirt, a water pot, and a few seeds containing the fruits and vegetables of your choice, and get to work in your backyard. In no time at all, you may have copious amounts of peppers, strawberries, carrots, lettuce, spinach, peaches, and raspberries to be able to use in as many recipes as you’d like.  The food produce being grown in an individual garden is far cheaper than any food produce that may be purchased in a grocery store.   Now that daylight savings time is in full effect, the sunshine is spending more time in front of the clouds instead of hiding behind them. You know what this means:  Summer running is upon us.  One of the easiest and best cardiovascular exercises is the act of running. It offers the body numerous health benefits and in my humble opinion, is a free act of therapy. Have you ever considered starting your own garden? I know I have, but what has held me back year after year is not knowing a thing about planting seeds. However, I love the idea of grocery shopping in my own backyard. Of course gardening saves you money on food in the long run, but what is even better is reaping the fresh and organic produce, straight from garden to table. Well, if you are stumped about seeds, look no further. Here are the tips you’ve been waiting for to get started on your vegetation voyage this season. Where to Start Before you can do anything, you have to decide where these seeds will be going. What should you think about when picking a spot?  • Sunlight. You want to make sure the seeds will be planted in a spot with full sun exposure for at least 5 hours per day.  • Proximity. Will you be able to reach the garden with the hose? Or walk to it easily with a watering can? Can you even see it from your windows to monitor it (and remember to tend to it)?  • Protection

Ever wonder how we even know the things that we do about food? In our modern day, we know what nutrients are in certain foods, how they help our bodies, and even what supplements to take. Well, Rome certainly wasn’t built in a day when it comes to nutritional discoveries throughout the centuries. In fact, many corrections have been made to original claims about food and nutrients. Vitamins make up one of the nutrient categories that has been refined many times over, in terms of the information we gathered about them. So... when were vitamins even discovered? I am glad you asked!  At the start of the 1900s, only the macronutrients were understood: carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. People did not know that, just as you need to eat enough foods from those three categories, you also need to get enough micronutrients (or vitamins and minerals). Smart Snacking Students and Granola bars! Have you looked at and compared food labels recently? Sometimes it’s overwhelming! We know we should be eating three meals a day plus a few healthy snacks. We all know we shouldn't go long hours without eating but it can be difficult to find time to pause for lunch, let alone meal plan and meal prep. With school, work and other responsibilities we are often relying on snacks to hold us over until we have time for a meal. Fruits and vegetables make for great snacks but also tend to take more time to prepare. This could be one of the reasons so many of us are reaching for the box of granola bars on top of our refrigerators when we need a quick snack. But are all granola bars created equal?!?
