This article provides brief tips to promote wound healing of pressure sores, bed sores, cuts, scrapes, and scratches. More severe wounds increase energy, vitamin, mineral, and protein requirements and therefore require medical interventions. Providing patients with the appropriate amount of nutrients and calories is essential to proper healing of wounds. The first tip is to ensure that the patient is consuming a balanced diet consisting of protein, fruits, vegetables dairy and grains. Although this tip may seem textbook, it’s important to remember that including a variety of healthy foods is the first step in wound healing. Second, it’s necessary that the patient is consuming 20-30 grams of protein at each meal and 10-15 grams with each snack. Protein is essential in wound healing. Third, the patient should consume enough water to keep hydrated. Unsweetened beverages such as tea, coffee, milk and 100% fruit juice are also appropriate options. Fourth, a higher requirement for some vitamins and minerals may be necessary for patients with very severe wounds. Lastly, patients with diabetes can most effectively prevent and treat a wound by controlling blood sugar levels.
