Evaluation of CNM Management Functions

Evaluation of Clinical Nutrition Management Functions

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has recently made available a new study focusing on the responsibilities and educational needs of the clinical nutrition manager (CNM). As a follow-up to previous research done on this topic, investigators conducted focus groups and interviews with CNMs in order to identify their responsibilities and compare the findings.

Over 84 job task statements were collected and organized into eight categories. These included ensuring compliance with regulations and standards, communication, monitoring quality assurance and performance, general practice, and management of information technology, finances, and human resources. In comparison to the previously collected data, there were more categories and they differed slightly. For example, managing resources expanded from one general category to three specific management resource categories.

This data is valuable because it shows the affects of our rapidly growing healthcare system on the dietetics profession. The job responsibilities of clinical nutrition managers is expanding and requires CNMs to wear multiple job "hats". In identifying these jobs, we can better prepare our CNMs to be competent in these tasks by creating professional development training. It also allows us to create benchmarks for performance evaluation.

Continuous monitoring of clinical nutrition management tasks is necessary to accommodate the changing nature of the job. Just as with any other area of dietetics practice, research must be up to date so that CNMs are practicing competently and efficiently.
