Rehab for cancer survivors

The Wall Street Journal wrote about a new rehabilitation program, called STAR, for cancer survivors.  The article discussed the lack of assistance for patients to return to a normal life after cancer treatment.  This absence allowed for the development of the STAR program to tackle this issue--like we talked about with our Outcome Management.  The STAR program is used in becoming utilized by many hospitals to mitigate any side effects of medications/chemo.  This program uses a combination of physical therapy and nutrition counseling.  If you want to know more about it, here’s the article link: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324039504578263914081204892.html -Rocco

More Motivational Interviewing

1/22/13 I also wanted to post about Motivational Interviewing since a lot of that video has stuck with me.  I have had the opportunity to counsel in several of my internship rotations, and I often find that it can be difficult to get certain things to "sink in"  or even to change at times, depending on the type of client you are working with.  This article here goes deeper into the ideals of Motivational Interviewing.  It reviews some of the basics (good review for our upcoming quiz), reviews a lot of literature pertaining to its use in the clinical setting, and deems MI a useful approach to improving cardiovascular health and "superior to 'traditional' advice" (Thompson et. al, 2010, p.1242).  SOURCE: Thompson, D. R., Chair, S. Y., Chan, S. W., Astin, F., Davidson, P. M., & Ski, C. Motivational Interviewing

Since we are studying about Motivational Interviewing, I ‘m posting a citation for an article I found by Dr. William Miller in 2009. The article goes over some of the same points covered in the video and adds additional information. The article can be found at http://www.motivationalinterview.org/Documents/nihms146933 or in Amer Psychol. September, 2009, 64(6), 527-537. Doi:10.1037/a0016830.  JY – 1/19/13.
