Farmer’s Market Haul: Eating Seasonally Through Your Local Farmer’s Markets

Image
Have you ever looked into what foods grow where you live? Many have not. Most people go to the grocery store and buy their produce year-round, without ever considering that those foods are not actually traditionally grown year-round. And that’s completely okay! But I want to challenge you to learn about your locally grown foods, and even try some of them! A great place to start would be your own local farmer’s market. This is perfect because most farmers’ markets are starting back up and/or moving back outside in April-June! Some local farmers/ markets near the Kent State Campus are: The Haymaker Farmer’s Market: Outdoor season begins April 4th, open from 10-1 on Franklin Ave. downtown Kent.  Thrive Together Farmer’s Market: Tuesdays from 3-6 pm, June 16-September 1st – 999 East Maine St., Ravenna, OH. Healing Your Body After a Major Sugary

And I truly ment real milk, like red top full fat milk. Well having this surgery in December its hard to get VD naturally (I live up north) but supplements would have to do for the time being and seeing as your body needs it it wasn’t a bad idea to add to my normal supplements.  Vitamin D-fortified foods can help make sure you me...

Kent State's Campus Kitchen

Picture this: twenty undergraduate students collaborating in a large industrial kitchen.  Some students are preparing apples for pies, breaking bread for stuffing, and cutting vegetables-- all for a Thanksgiving meal. Four volunteers are in the pantry cleaning and taking inventory. A recovery team is organizing the latest fresh produce picked up from Trader Joe's. Later, all reunite to organize the hundreds of canned goods donated over the past few days. This food will eventually be distributed to hungry and food insecure members of the Kent community.              This transpired on Saturday November 17 th , at the end of national Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week.   The office of Community Engaged Learning held a “Super Service Saturday” where approximately forty three volunteers helped feed community members in Kent.   Is it the season of givi...
