Avoiding Fat at ALL Cost?? Stop It!

Lately, I have been seeing a handful of recipes from people who have started to avoid oil as well as other fats in their diets. Some people are coming up with some tasty oil-free salad dressing, and that is wonderful for people that maybe need to watch their fat intake, but plant-based oils such as canola, flaxseed, or soybean oils should NOT be looked at as being unhealthy like saturated animal fats are. Not all fats clog our arteries or raise our cholesterol. In fact, plant based oils have zero cholesterol in them. Cholesterol only comes from animal products.

Our bodies need both fat and carbs in addition to protein. It is also worth noting that if you eat too much of any one of these macronutrients, your body will make fat out of anything you eat in excess. Yes, this includes protein.

Fats are essential for different bodily functions and are needed for good overall health. They are also important in absorbing fat soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E, and K. Your hormone health is dependent on fats as well. In fact one of the Omega 3 Fatty Acids, Alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA, cannot be made by the body and must be gotten from the foods you eat. From the ALA that we eat, our bodies can make a small amount of the other two Omega 3 Fatty Acid known as Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Because our body can only make a very small amount of EPA and DHA from eating ALA, we really need to be making sure we are eating foods rich in all three of these Omega-3 Fatty Acids.

So don’t be afraid to use oil in your salad dressings, or drizzle some olive oil or flaxseed oil over your pasta. Don’t go over-board with them, but you don’t have to avoid them.

You can get these healthy Omega-3 fats from oils, nuts, seeds, fish and seafood.

If you’re someone who worries about eating too much fat, or eating it in the right amount and you are afraid to use the healthy oils that I mentioned above, it would be good to consult a registered dietitian nutritionist for some guidance.
