Herbal Remedy Usage and Dietetics
This article discusses American’s high usage of herbal
remedies despite the fact that many are not FDA approved. According to the CDC
one in five Americans are using some form of a dietary supplement. More Reliable
studies need to be done to determine the safety and effectiveness of these. There
is still debate on what safe dosage is considered and what possible side
effects may occur.
As clinical dietitians it is important for us to educate
clients about supplements and their interactions with nutrients or medications.
We also need to educate them on the lack of scientific knowledge supporting their
usage. In practice, we also need to remember when screening and finding out
health history that we should be asking about herbal supplement usage as well. For
