Safe Treats No Tricks

Happy Halloween!

It’s that time of year when children (and even some adults!) get to dress up as their favorite characters, celebrities, foods, video games, and more. Then it’s off to explore the neighborhood and community, show off those amazing costumes, and collect some tasty treats!

However, not everyone always gets to enjoy the same experience while trick or treating, especially those with food allergies.

The big 9 allergens are as follows:

While fish and shellfish aren’t very common in most Halloween treats and snacks, several other of the big 9 food allergens can be found in popular treats!

Milk - Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bars, Milk Duds, and many varieties of M&M’s

Soy - Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Snickers

Wheat - KitKats, Twix, Crunch Bars
Peanuts - Reeses Peanut Butter Cups, Butterfingers, Snickers
Treenuts - Almond Joys and Ferroro Roche

For an inclusive Halloween this year so all kiddos (and adults) can feel included, consider handing out some allergen friendly treats!

Stickers, temporary tattoos, and fun pencils

Bubbles, glow sticks, and small Halloween toys

Allergy-friendly candies and individually packaged snacks with clearly labeled ingredients on the packaging

You can also participate in the Teal Pumpkin Project by offering non-food treats for children with food allergies and other dietary restrictions. ***Please keep allergen friendly treats in a separate treat container if planning to hand out both types of treats***

Hope you all have a fun and safe Halloween!
