Say NO to Fad Diets!

Ever thought about trying a fad diet to lose weight quickly? Well, think again! Fad diets may seem like a good idea in the beginning. However, they are not very healthy for your body. One common fad diet is a juice cleanse or detox. In this type of diet the person drinks liquids that only contain fruits, vegetables, water or tea for usually about a week and it is supposed to “cleanse” the body. Seems like a healthy diet right? Well, according to Choosemyplate.gov, a healthy balanced diet includes 6oz grains, 3c vegetables, 2c fruit, 3c dairy, 5.5oz protein. These are all needed for different processes in our body and to ensure we are getting enough of each macronutrient, vitamin and mineral. I don’t know about you but I don’t see many of these items included in this diet. There is no dairy, no grains, and barely any protein. On a diet like this your body is going to be missing out on many important nutrients that are vital for your body to function properly. Still haven’t changed your mind? Well what if I told you that during the juice cleanse you would mostly just lose water weight that will be gained back as soon as you start eating normal again. Less than 15% of people keep any of the weight off that they lose. On top of barely losing any fat you also may experience indigestion, hunger pain, impaired concentration, fatigue, and nausea all due inadequate intake of food. And the best part about all of this is…… YOUR LIVER DETOXES YOUR BODY ON IT’S OWN EVERYDAY! There is no need for you to cleanse or detox your body. Your liver naturally removes substances that your body doesn’t need and excretes them. So, next time you think about trying a fad diet to drop those extra pounds maybe reconsider.

  1. I love the fact that you talked about fad diets, especially cleanses! The amount of people that I’ve heard trying them is insane. Our bodies need so much more than what people give them on a cleanse or detox. The other issue I find with these two fads is that typically these diets are only supposed to be done for a few days but some people do them for a lot longer which is even worse and will lead to so many deficiencies in the long run. Also, I really enjoy how you talked about our livers doing exactly what these detox diets are supposed to do. I think this is the most important thing, if more people were aware of this maybe they wouldn’t be so quick to try these unhealthy diets. Great post!
