Liquid Chlorophyll: Nutritional Supplement or Fad Diet?

What is Chlorophyll?

It plays a role in giving plants there green color and allows them absorb light from the sun and convert it to energy. However, it is also full of many vitamins and minerals that are good for the body.

Normally chlorophyll is consumed through eating vegetables but is minimally absorbed in this state. So, liquid chlorophyll has made its way to the supplement shelves where it can be consumed with water (chlorophyll water). A lot of people on social media have been raving about how good chlorophyll water is and all the benefits it has.

So is it good for you to take the supplement or just a fad diet? 



First lets look at the benefits and risks:

Benefits:

1. Promotes the production of red blood cells.

2. It absorbs toxins

3. Acts as an internal deodorant: bad breath, sweat, stools, urine, food odors (such as garlic) and menstrual odors. The deodorant effect is also shown for people that have a colostomy.

4. Helps with digestion, important to note it is not a laxative.

5. It has antioxidant capacities. 

6. Could reduce the risk of cancer

8. Increases the production of white blood cells, fighting against conditions such leukopenia.

9. The components are anti-inflammatory, it accelerates healing. The effects are anti-inflammatory and healing when applied directly to the wound.

10. It reduces the production of gas and toxins that occur during digestion and contributes to protecting the liver.

Risks:

1. It can cause digestive problems

2. Diarrhea

3. Green, black, or yellow stool that can be mistaken for gastrointestinal bleeding

Important notes:

We can see that liquid chlorophyll can have many benefits to the body, however, it should not be used in place of eating a healthy well balanced diet. Food is fuel to the body and can provide all the benefits listed above when consuming the right kinds of food. 

So should you take liquid chlorophyll?

It's up to you...but it has shown to help many people when it comes to odors or digestive issues and not show any harm, but that doesn't mean it can't have bad effects or become a fad diet in the future. It is important to note that not may studies have been done on liquid chlorophyll, therefore, there could be concerns put into place later on. Do your research and talk with other medical professional to see if chlorophyll could work for you.
