Breakfast of Champions?
Is Breakfast Really the Most Important Meal of The Day?
Breakfast literally means “to break the fast.” It is the first meal of the day after a night's rest. It was stressed around 60 years ago, that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. As of today, many people have emphasized how important intermittent fasting. So, the question is whether breakfast is as essential as it seems?
Skipping an Egg-cellent Breakfast
The term “eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper” has held strong although a recent study concluded that 15% skip breakfast regularly. Adults believe that breakfast is important, yet they still skip breakfast due to reasons such as reduced appetite, weight loss, intermittent fasting, or lack of time. As with most things in nutrition, the answer is complex. Eating regular meals and snacks allows for more opportunities throughout the day to give the body the energy and nutrients to function optimally. However, if a person can fit their nutrients in during other meals, breakfast may not be the most critical meal of the day.
Serving Sunny Side
Both experts and existing research indicate that eating breakfast can have positive effects on both your mind and body. Eating breakfast daily will reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and high cholesterol. They are also more likely to have higher intake of essential vitamins such as folate, calcium, and iron. Abnormal metabolic outcomes were higher among those who didn’t eat breakfast than those who ate the meal consistently.
Benefits of Breaking the Fasting
On the other end, many people believe implementing intermittent fasting is more beneficial. There is evidence to explain how time-restricted eating is associated with promoting weight loss, reducing inflammation, and improving diabetes management. This is related to a greater depletion of glycogen stores, and increased fat loss. Not only that but it may improve brain function and life expectancy.
Hashing it Out Over Breakfast
Caution should be taken when recommending eating breakfast for weight loss, It depends on the portion and what you choose to eat. If you do not have an appetite in the morning, forcing yourself to eat breakfast isn’t likely the best solution. This also goes for if you are hungry for breakfast, you should not ignore it because it may lead to overeating later. Whether you start consuming your breakfast at the beginning of the day or in the middle of the day, it depends on what works best for you.
