Healthy you, Healthy Planet!

The effects of climate change are being felt around the world. Environmental concerns and natural disasters are becoming an almost daily occurrence in the news and across social media.

It is up to each of us to do our part to halt the climate crisis in its tracks. One major area where everyone can make a difference is in our food choices! Shifting towards sustainable food choices is a little step each of us can take to make a huge difference!

Dietitians can play an important role in educating the public on sustainable food choices and how these can be incorporated into everyday lives.

                                            What Are Sustainable Foods?!?

Sustainable foods are those produced, processed, and consumed in a way that minimizes negative impacts on:

  • The Environment
    • Conserve natural resources and promote biodiversity
  • Our Society & Economy
    • Support fair labor practices

The aim is to create a food system that can meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. How can we do this?!?

  • Choose Locally Sourced Foods: Buying locally grown and produced foods reduces the carbon footprint associated with transportation. Visit farmers' markets or join a community-supported agriculture (CSA) program to support local farmers.

  • Opt for Organic: Organic farming practices prioritize soil health and biodiversity. Organic foods are grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, making them a more sustainable choice.

  • Reduce Meat Consumption: Meat production has a significant environmental impact. Consider incorporating more plant-based meals into your diet or choosing sustainably sourced, grass-fed meat options.
  • Minimize Food Waste: Be mindful of food waste by planning meals, using leftovers creatively, and composting food scraps.

  • Support Sustainable Seafood: Look for eco-certifications like MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) or ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council) when buying seafood. These certifications ensure that seafood is sourced responsibly.

  • Embrace Seasonal Eating: Enjoying fruits and vegetables that are in season reduces the energy required for storage and transportation.

  • Reduce Single-Use Plastics: Minimize your use of single-use plastics in food packaging by opting for products with eco-friendly packaging or buying in bulk.

Our food choices have a profound impact on the environment and our well-being. By opting for sustainable foods and adopting eco-conscious practices, we can have a healthier planet while nourishing our bodies. So, let's embrace sustainable foods as a delicious and meaningful way to make a positive impact on our world!
