Holiday Eating Tips

The holidays are right around the corner! Only 11 days away from Thanksgiving and 43 days from Christmas to be exact. My favorite thing about the holidays is spending time with my family and friends, and what better way to do that than by getting together and sharing our favorite dishes? During the holidays there is always more food being served. This makes it easy to overeat, and temptations are everywhere.

Here are 3 Healthy Tips to get you Through the Holidays:

1.   Make Fruits and Vegetables Part of Your Plate

Your typical holiday dinner consists of casseroles, mac and cheese, rolls, and mashed potatoes, right? Why not add fruit and veggies to your plate? Some of my favorites are baked sweet potatoes and brussels sprouts, a fall harvest salad, and a fruit and cheese board. Fruit and veggie dishes are not only packed with nutrients but can be extremely flavorful! Bring one of these dishes to your next holiday party and I promise you won’t disappoint!

2.   Fit in Favorites

NO food needs to be on the naughty list. Is there a specific dish you look forward to every year? I know mine is pumpkin pie!!!! You don’t have to limit your favorite foods, so go ahead and eat a slice of grandma’s famous pumpkin pie! Plan ahead what dish you absolutely want to have and savor a smaller serving, and of course, ENJOY!

REMEMBER EVERYTHING IN MODERATION IS KEY.

3.   Stick to Smaller Portions

Outsmart the buffet and consume smaller portions. You can still try all the delicious foods, just consume them in a smaller size. Not only is sticking to smaller portions a better idea, but it helps to reduce food waste. Did you know that the holidays are extremely wasteful when it comes to food? There is roughly a 25% increase in food waste from Americans between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. Here are some tips to reduce food waste:

·  Consume smaller portions

·  Take only what you can eat, then go back for more

·  Save leftovers

·  Plan ahead and stick to your shopping list
