Farmer’s Market Haul: Eating Seasonally Through Your Local Farmer’s Markets

Have you ever looked into what foods grow where you live? Many have not. Most people go to the grocery store and buy their produce year-round, without ever considering that those foods are not actually traditionally grown year-round. And that’s completely okay! But I want to challenge you to learn about your locally grown foods, and even try some of them!

A great place to start would be your own local farmer’s market. This is perfect because most farmers’ markets are starting back up and/or moving back outside in April-June!

Some local farmers/ markets near the Kent State Campus are:

  • The Haymaker Farmer’s Market: Outdoor season begins April 4th, open from 10-1 on Franklin Ave. downtown Kent.

  • Thrive Together Farmer’s Market: Tuesdays from 3-6 pm, June 16-September 1st – 999 East Maine St., Ravenna, OH.

  • Stow Community Farmer’s Market: Saturdays from 9-12:30, May 30th-October 6th – 1567 Pilgrim Drive, Stow, OH.

  • Hudson Farmer’s Market: 9-12:30, June 6th-October 10th – On the Village Greens, downtown Hudson, OH.

Some foods that are grown locally in April and May, which you might be able to find at your local farmer’s market, include:

  • Fruits: strawberries

  • Vegetables: asparagus, rhubarb, cabbage, collard greens, kale, mustard greens, radishes, spinach, turnip greens.

Now would be a great time to start planning your fresh spring salads!

Check out the Ohio Farm Bureau website (first link below) to see what foods are in season and when. Each month has its own unique set of foods. This will help you to broaden your horizons by trying all sorts of new foods that will help to expand your nutrition and palate. You’ll also be supporting your local businesses and community, be able to find access to local events, and potentially even start a new weekend tradition!

Let me know what you think of your local farmer’s market and if you tried any new foods!
