It's Tea Time!

Feeling anxious or stressed?

You're not alone, finding ways to destress and unwind in today’s world can be difficult. It’s so important to get a good handle on your stress levels because it can affect a variety of aspects, including your emotions, behaviors, and physical health. There are many different ways to deal with stress, like winding down with a nice cup of hot tea. Drinking tea can be an easy way to relax and gather your thoughts.

Have you tried any of these stress-relieving teas before?

  • Chamomile Tea: Chamomile tea is sweet and known for its calming effect on the body. This tea is made using chamomile flowers in hot water. Put 1 tsp of dried chamomile flowers or 2 Tbsp of fresh flowers in a pot of boiling water and steep for 5-10 minutes. Drink before bed for a good night’s sleep, or drink throughout the day to calm your nerves.
  • Green Tea: Green tea is known for its amazing health benefits. Research shows that it may help improve weight loss, blood pressure, and cholesterol. There is even some research out there on green tea and cancer prevention! Green tea can also provide an anti-anxiety effect because it contains an amino acid known as L-theanine. This amino acid has a direct effect on the brain and increased alpha wave activity, thus increasing relaxation without a drowsy effect. Green tea should not be brewed with hot, boiling water. Instead, brew it between 150-170 degrees Fahrenheit and steep for 1-3 minutes.
  • Passionflower Tea: This tea is made from flowers and has a sweet, mild flavor. Passionflower tea has long been used in Europe as a natural remedy for anxiety. The flavonoids in this tea have a harmonizing effect on GABA receptors. In addition, this tea contains a type of flavonoid called chrysin, which can be extremely effective at reducing anxious feelings. To brew, use 1 tsp of dried passionflower petals for every 8 ounces of water. Steep in boiling water for 5-10 minutes and drink before bed or throughout your day.

  • Lemon Balm Tea: Lemon balm tea has a tart flavor and aroma that can boost your mood and offer stress relief. Research has found that consuming lemon balm tea decreased feelings of anxiety approximately one hour after consumption. This tea is made using 1 Tbsp of dried leaves or 2 Tbsp of fresh leaves for every cup of boiling water. Steep for 5-10 minutes and drink throughout the day to calm nerves and soothe symptoms of anxiety.
  • Lavender Tea: Lavender is very well known for its calming properties and is one of the most popular herbal remedies for stress and anxiety. Lavender tea may also promote the production of dopamine (your happy hormone)  while decreasing cortisol (your stress hormone). Brew this tea with 2 tsp of lavender flowers for every 8 ounces of water. Steep in hot water for 10 minutes and drink an hour before bed to improve sleep, or throughout the day to rid yourself of any feelings of stress.
