New Nutrition Label

Blog Post 1

Over the next year or two you can expect to see changes to the nutrition facts panel. The FDA has collaborated with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to provide several, much needed, changes to the panel which has not been updated since the early 90s. The changes will focus on serving sizes, nutrients and ingredients of importance, and updates to the percent daily values.

The serving sizes will now reflect a more “realistic” portion size. This change aims to decrease the need to multiply the rest of the panel by the amount consumed. It hopes to achieve this effect by providing serving sizes more in line with the amount typically consumed in one sitting.

One of the biggest changes is to the nutrients listed on the panel. Vitamins A and C  are not typically deficient in the American diet and will now be omitted from the panel. Vitamin D and potassium, however, will be added to the panel due to the general lack of these nutrients from the American Diet. Also, a new category will be listed under total carbohydrates. Now, along with dietary fiber, will be “added sugars.” This category will illustrate the amount of sugar that has been added to the product during processing.

These changes will hopefully make reading the panel easier for the general public. It aims to illustrate the nutrients that are typically deficient in the diet and also highlight the nutrients that should be avoided.
