Dietitians in the grocery store

Most people think of health care settings when they think about where dietitians are located. However, dietitians can be found in grocery stores too. Dietitians in grocery stores can help implement the suggestions that are given to patients and families by dietitians in the clinical setting in regard to their diet, allergies, and overall healthy eating habits. Many families can feel overwhelmed when they hear they have to change the way they eat. Especially when they are told to start looking at food labels and ingredient lists. Information can be difficult to comprehend and remember. Therefore, it can be hard to take what you learned in an office to incorporating it into your life. Dietitians in grocery stores can incorporate hands on education in the aisles of grocery stores that was explained in the office by a health care professional. This can make shopping less stressful for patients and their families. It can also make it easier to follow the recommendations made by health care professionals.
Dietitians have multiple roles in the grocery stores. They can develop recipes, educate employees on food safety, help families who have questions about special diets and educate them on how to read food labels and ingredient lists. Ever go to the grocery store and see multiple types and brands of rice, cereal, or granola bars, and not know which one to choose? It can be confusing to choose the “healthy” option but with the help of a dietitian in the store, it can be easier. Dietitians will obviously not always be there for assistance, but you could always schedule an appointment with the dietitian to be there when you shop so they can help. Dietitians can also create labels for areas on products that they recommend and would be their choice to help customers choose healthier options.  Cooking demonstrations and tours can be given at grocery stores as well to promote new items and new cooking techniques that involve healthier options. Dietitians are a major benefit to grocery stores and will continue to grow to help customers choose healthier options and make grocery shopping less stressful.
