The Keto Diet

The ketogenic diet, or keto, is one of the most popular fad diets right now.
A fad diet is exactly what it sounds like: a diet that is cool for the moment
until something new and better comes along.
People are OBSESSED with keto because it is an easy way to lose a lot of weight.
eto diet isn’t all about weight loss. It has been proven to lessen seizures in
individuals with epilepsy.

So what is keto?
Keto meals consist of low carb (50g or less per day), high fat, and moderate protein
food choices. For example, you could eat a triple bacon cheeseburger (without bun)
and it would fit this diet. But does that really sound like the best option for a healthy
body?

While people are focusing on the the weight loss, they are ignoring the damage it
can do to the body. There are some pretty nasty side effects that come along with
this diet. When someone starts the keto diet, it’s going to feel awful. People call this
the ‘keto flu.’ People feel fatigued because the body is running out of sugar for
energy, which it prefers to use for fuel. Once it finds fat as its new source, the body
will have to adjust, which typically means diarrhea. Yikes.

Using fat for energy puts the body into something called ketosis. Basically, ketones
from breaking down fat build up in the blood and can make the blood more acidic,
triggering the dangerous disease, ketoacidosis. This same condition occurs in
diabetics when their sugars are out of control, and can be fatal.

In addition to needing carbs for muscle performance, we just need to keep our muscles.
The keto diet burns fat, but it will also burn up some lean muscle. Muscle burns more calories
than fat. Losing this muscle will make it harder for the body to burn calories, so going off the keto
diet will cause weight gain, maybe even more than was lost initially.

Even though keto is a low carb diet, people can eat plenty of vegetables for a small amount of carbs.
Most people prefer to take this as an opportunity to eat a huge amount of the fats we should be
limiting to prevent heart disease.

So... is keto really worth it?
