October Gardening

I know that once October hits, the feeling of fall really starts to set in. Fall is such a beautiful season with all the changing colors all around. It is contributed with the beautiful fall plants that continue to bloom well into November.

Here is a list of a few that you can maintain throughout this spooky and spectacular season:

·     Annuals, grow 10-12 inches tall
·     They don’t mind it being cool at night, and usually are planted in containers
·     Tip: you can split up a few mums and turn them into multiple plants.

Tulips
·     Perennials, grow 12-36 inches tall
·     Plant tulips before the ground freezes, 4-6 inches part. They need a sunny location.
·     The holes must be dug deep in order for them to be protected during the winter.

Aster
·     Perennial, grows 4-6 feet tall
·     They start off small, but grow large very quickly. Plant in the spring a few feet apart. They will last well into fall and add lots of beautiful colors.
·     They come in a ton of different colors!

The ten longest lasting blooms around are Geraniums, Pansies, Zinnias, Petunias, Phlox, Black-eyed Susans, Yarrow, Salvia, Indian Blanket, and Impatiens.

With that being said, we all know that the most fun and tasty fall plant is PUMPKIN! Try different recipes with pumpkin this fall! Roasted pumpkin seeds are my absolute favorite (behind Pumpkin bread of course). Try out this recipe for a different flavor on your roasted pumpkin seeds this year.

Spiced Pumpkin Seeds
½ cup sugar
¼ tsp salt
¼ to ½ cinnamon
6 tablespoons milk
½ cup dried pumpkin seeds
½ tsp vanilla

1.    Mix first four ingredients and cook slowly in a medium pan, stirring occasionally, until sugar dissolves.
2.    Remove from heat; add seeds and vanilla.
3.    Beat until mixture thickens and hardens.

4.    Turn onto wax paper and quickly separate seeds with a fork to let dry. Once cool, give them a taste. Store in a plastic container for up to a week.
