Food Service Shortages

HELP WANTED

Have you noticed the increased number of “We’re Hiring” signs in front of restaurants and fast-food places? How about a shortage of menu items or ingredients? Maybe even a limit on plastic straws? If you have noticed all these things know that you’re not going crazy. The truth is we are in a supply shortage AND a worker shortage right now- talk about a double whammy.

WHERE'S THE GOODS?

I am currently at my Food Service rotation at a hospital so I get to see firsthand how food service managers are impacted by these shortages. There are approximately 100 things on backorder from our primary suppliers and we are constantly trying to find temporary replacements for trays, cups, lids, straws, ingredients, and single serve treats for our patients and café customers. But it’s not just us- its many other hospitals, restaurants, and grocery stores that have been impacted by supply chain disruptions. This doesn't mean you should panic buy- only buy what you need or the supply issues will get worse- we are all in this together.

PASS ALONG KINDNESS

There are many open food service positions across the board, so if you are looking for a job this is a great place to look! But if you are a food service manager you may be struggling to fill out weekly schedules. If you are going out to eat, please keep in mind that your food may take a little longer and it is not your server’s fault. Be kind to the people in food service right now, there are many factors making it much more difficult to work in this arena right now. Be happy you get to eat out and don’t forget to tip the people serving you! These people may be over worked right now, and your kindness may help get them through the day.

Be kind, be smart, and be safe!

  1. I am seeing food and supply shortages in my hospital as well. We are also short staffed. It is a tough time to work in food settings, any work setting really. When I see others getting irritable about orders taking longer than usual to be fulfilled, I kindly remind them that this is tough time for everyone and that every business is short staffed and to have more patience.
I like your positive thinking! Great post!
