Power of Social Networking

As many of you know social networking has exploded in the last decade. Ten years ago Dietitian's would not have dreamed of being able to give clients good quality information through social networks like Twitter or Facebook or even blogs. Social media has become a way to stay connected with family, friends, and is a vital tool for professionals and marketing businesses. It is extremely important that Dietitian's know how to use social media to help their field grow. It is also important that everyone separate their personal social media from their professional social media. Social media gives Dietitian's the opportunity to get the nutrition messages out there and build their own brand. Every Dietitian will have their own brand even though they are providing the same information. Social media allows Dietitian's to make a name for themselves and provides a credible source for the general public.

It is easy for anyone to create a Facebook page or blog related to nutrition. Since, nutrition is such a hot topic there is a lot of misinformation out there because anyone can write about it. This is why Registered Dietitian's need to make a presence on social media. This will help to combat all the misinformation about nutrition that is circulating the web. News and trends on social media also travel fast. If Registered Dietitians have an active presence on social media their accurate information will be spread quickly. Especially when in a managerial role it is important to make sure you are leading the way for other Dietitian's and guiding your staff of Dietitian's if they have a presence on social media.

1. Show integrity
2. Remain authentic
3. Stay civil
4. Take precautions
5. Show professionalism
6. Keep information confidential
7. Value originality
8. Scrutinize your online presence
