There are 5 key trends that smartphones have a major role and how it can help decrease the obesity epidemic. These also give RDs a source to use to get correct nutrition messages to the public.
1                   Higher quality is associated with healthier foods
2.                 The evolution of modern eating is driving revolution of healthy food
3.                  Health and wellness go mainstream
4.                  Shifting demographics influence food desires
5.                 Helped consumers increase their food literacy
Smartphone have given people the ability to look up nutrition facts on hand and help them make decisions on the healthier option.  We have already discussed the use of social media and the availability of nutrition information that consumers have. In the article it states that “42% of shoppers in the U.S. want foods made with “simple” ingredients and 46% want foods with better flavor, which is associated with freshness” Consumers are also using their available use of social media and smartphones to follow fad diet such as gluten-free and paleo because they perceive that products that follow it are higher quality. The use of these outlets give RDs a chance to connect with consumers so they have the right information and are able to make the smartest and healthiest decision.  Also Clinical Nutrition managers can be able to recommend creditable resources to their patients to use for nutrition information.
