5 Important Leadership Skills for Today’s Dietitian

An article in Today’s Dietitian lists the five most important leadership skills needed for dietitians in the upcoming years. The first important skill is collaboration. I highlighted the importance of sharing your knowledge, becoming a role model, and networking with other professionals. The next skill is communication. This skill helps to strengthen collaboration and is needed in all aspects of being a dietitian. Communication skills over social media platforms continue to gain importance in the field. The author also suggests improving communication skills by; attending networking events in the community, becoming a mentor, and attending workshops to become a better speaker. Communication is also necessary for the next leadership skill of authentic leadership. Finding your own style is important to leadership. Authentic leadership is based on identifying your own values and communicating them effectively. It is also important to listen to all feedback. The fourth skill needed by dietitians is vision. Vision is about looking to the future and planning accordingly. This skill is all about seeing the bigger picture and leading your team toward your goals. To improve this skill it is important to communicate your vision, and stay current on trends. Finally, innovation is the last skill of effective leaders. It is not enough to have a vision of the future, dietitians must look for needs in the community. You cannot be afraid to take risks and dream big.
