Acne: The Role of Medical Nutrition Therapy
In the past, research has shown conflicting results on how/if a persons diet has an impact on developing acne. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, there is recent evidence that shows that there is a relationship between diet and the development of acne. This study suggests that, individuals who consume a high glycemic index carbohydrate diet have a greater chance of developing acne. Therefore, medical nutrition therapy can be used to treat some patients who experience acne. A healthy diet intervention to treat acne includes a low glycemic index diet, decrease consumption of saturated fat and increased intake of whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Low glycemic diets can also have a positive impact on health by aiding with weight loss, and decreasing the risk of obesity, diabetes, and cancer. Overall each patient who is experiencing acne should have an individualized dietary approach and should consider the benefits from dietary counseling.
