With the holidays right around the corner it is easy to get overwhelmed with the amount of high fat foods, desserts, and alcoholic beverages that are being served at family gatherings or office parties. Although it can be tough to be health conscious during the holidays, here are some easy swaps you can make, while still enjoying your food.

TURKEY over Ham

Turkey is a low-fat, lean protein food, while ham is high in sodium. If you want to further decrease your fat intake, you can remove the skin from the turkey.

SWEET POTATOES over White Potatoes

Sweet potatoes contain less calories than white potatoes. They are also high in Vitamin A, C, and Magnesium. Sweet potatoes can also be made with cinnamon, which has benefits such as decreasing triglycerides and cholesterol.

HERBS & SPICES over Salt

Herbs and spices can be used to reduce sodium and fat in your cooking and are a good source of antioxidants. Herbs and spices include: cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, rosemary, and thyme.

PUMPKIN PIE over Pecan Pie

Pumpkin pie has less calories and fat than pecan pie. Pumpkin is a great source of potassium, calcium, and beta-carotene.

  1. Great post! I love all the pictures of the food, it broke up the text really well. The tip on using more herbs and spices to reduce sodium was awesome - all the examples were perfect for Thanksgiving. Also, your post had a lot of nutrition education, but was written in a way that was easy to read and engaging. Thanks for sharing! -RP
