Hibernation or Hydration?

Image
Have you ever felt an overwhelming amount of fatigue take over your body? Or how about you just haven't been feeling like yourself lately and you can't figure out why? If you answered yes to either of these questions- I want you to take a moment and honestly reflect on how much water you've been drinking. Have you noticed less frequent urination patterns or darker than normal urine color? If so, you might be suffering from a mild to severe case of dehydration.  Dehydration occurs when your body loses more fluid than it's taking in. As the weather gets colder and you're not as hot as you're used to being in the summer, you may notice it's not as easy to drink adequate amounts of water consistently on a daily basis.  Water has many important jobs. It: carries nutrients and oxygen to your cells flushes bacteria from your bladder aids in digestion prevents constipation normalizes blood pressure protects organs and tissues cushions joints regulates body temperatu...

Save the Date

Dates are amazing - sweet, gooey, delicious, and packed with nutrients! Just two dates provide 133 Calories, 36g carbs, 3.2g of fiber, 0g of fat, 2% DV calcium, 2% DV of iron, 7% DV of potassium, 19% DV of copper, 7% DV of vitamin B6, and 6% DV of magnesium. It’s really easy to eat two. There are two types of dates that you can find at the grocery store. Deglet Noor dates are smaller while Medjool dates are larger (and happen to contain significantly more calcium). I think Medjool are the best. As a source of whole, plant-based nutrition dates can be enjoyed raw or used as an ingredient in recipes such as: -TM  https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/medjool-dates#nutrients https://www.vidhyashomecooking.com/pumpkin-pie-spiced-date-and-nut-balls/ Greger, M., & Stone, G. Autumn Leaves & Pumpkin, Please!

Image
It's that time of year in Northeast Ohio when leaves fall from trees and pumpkins take over without saying please. You look around and see pumpkin decorations, pumpkin scented fragrances, pumpkin patches, pumpkin carving, pumpkin flavored foods, and pumpkin flavored drinks. It's everywhere. When you think of your top 5 favorite pumpkin-containing foods, I can almost guarantee that most of them (if not all of them) are sweet treats with lots of sugar. Your list most likely contains one or more of the following: pumpkin rolls, pumpkin pies, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin pancakes/waffles, pumpkin ice cream, or pumpkin spice coffees. (If you're like me and love everything pumpkin too you're probably thinking- YUM!) Believe it or not, pumpkin in and of itself has a ton of health benefits. According to the nutrition information provided by the USDA, one cup of pumpkin has 49 calories, 1.8g of protein, 12g carbohydrates, 0.17g fat and 27g fiber. Fresh pumpkin is a great low-calorie...
