What's All the Wine-ing About?
Wine. We can drink it, we can cook with it, you can go on trips just to taste it, it’s dry, it’s sweet, the Mediterranean diet and French Paradox include wine in their theories…..
Yep. There’s a lot to say about wine. Wine, especially red wine, is a topic that has come and gone from the health world limelight. At one time it had health benefits, and now we know that may not be the case.
The proposed idea behind wine being so wonderful in the first place was that the skin of grapes contained a compound called resveratrol- an antioxidant.
An anti-what?!
An antioxidant helps to prevent and fix cell damage from our everyday stressors and environment. Resveratrol itself is said to have cardioprotective and anticancer benefits along with benefits for those with nervous system diseases (Fabjanowicz, Płotka-Wasylka, & Namieśnik, 2018).
So, knowing that you would think then wine is some rock star of nutrition, right? Unfortunately, probably not.
Essentially, while this antioxidant compound exists in wine people commonly drink too much and the benefits are outweighed by the effects of alcohol. In fact, wine, just like all other forms of alcohol, could cause a number of other complications in excess (Thomas, 2020).
So, what’s the dietetics take?
Dietetics is evidence-based (meaning that we go with the current research studies). So yes, we would tell you the current studies states that wine’s cons may outweigh the pros here. As with any alcoholic beverage, please drink responsibly!
