A Sweet Balance: The Health Benefits of Dark Chocolate
I like, as many others do, enjoying a sweet treat after dinner or even just as a pick-me-up throughout the day. I know this can be conflicting, as some may think that you should not eat dessert every day; however, I believe balance is key, so why not incorporate a nice tang of sweetness into your daily life? The best part is that it doesn’t have to be necessarily “bad” for you. What if I were to tell you that you could enjoy dessert every day that not only tastes good but also offers health benefits?
I am talking about chocolate, but not just any type of chocolate, dark chocolate. Dark chocolate offers a multi-sensorial experience with its combination of color, snap, mouthfeel, and its array of flavors and aromas. Not only does this dessert act as a chemical mood booster, but it can also be the perfect addition to a well-balanced diet by offering health benefits. Dark chocolate with 70% cocoa content is rich in plant-based chemicals called flavanols. Research has shown that flavanols may support nitric oxide production. Why is this important to our health? Nitric oxide acts as a vasodilator, widening and relaxing blood vessels to improve blood flow, as well as oxygen delivery and nutrient transport. Flavanols may also increase insulin sensitivity, potentially reducing the risk of diabetes.
However, it is important to keep in mind that dark chocolate does have a higher calorie content; therefore, portion size should be controlled to 1–2-ounce servings. Not to worry, though, because dark chocolate is very versatile and pairs well with countless foods, such as fruit, nuts, and even coffee. So go ahead, enjoy your little sweet treat every day while also gaining those health benefits!
Try this nut and fruit bark recipe at home using dark chocolate:
Recipe by the Mayo Clinic
1 pound dark chocolate, coarsely chopped
1 teaspoon instant espresso powder (optional)
1/2 cup dried cherries, cranberries or blueberries
1/2 cup macadamia nuts, chopped
1/2 cup cashews, chopped
1/2 teaspoon coarse sea salt, optional
Line the bottom and sides of a 15x10x1-inch baking pan with foil. Set aside. In a microwave-safe bowl, heat chocolate at 30-second intervals, stirring between intervals until chocolate is melted. Stir in espresso powder and half the fruit and nuts. Spread into prepared pan, top with remaining fruit and nuts. Sprinkle with salt if desired. Refrigerate for 30 minutes or until firm. Break into pieces, and store in an airtight container.
