"Discover the Power of Nutrition"

March is National Nutrition Month

March is National Nutrition Month!! This year's theme is "Discover the Power of Nutrition”

and I think it is a great theme to show how influential nutrition can be on someone's health.
Not everyone knows how powerful nutrition can truly be for someone. The saying “you are
what you eat” is almost entirely true because of the effects it can do. Someone who eats fruits
and veggies constantly has an overall better health than someone who eats fast food all the
time.
Now, with that being said there is so much misinformation out there revolving around
nutrition that can really hurt someone's body in the long run. It is important for people to take
advice or information from people with a background in nutrition like registered dietitians.
Registered dietitians spend years understanding and analyzing how micronutrients and
macronutrients affect our bodies. Influencers do not have those credentials and do not have the scientific knowledge like registered dietitians do! Influencers may have some truth to their
knowledge but most cannot back up why those truths are happening to the body. Always be aware who you are taking advice from and be careful! Registered dietitians are the experts to nutrition knowledge!

Here are some Basic Nutrition Tips!

  1. Eating breakfast can make or break your day with what you eat!
    • Having a nutritious breakfast can give you energy and better brain function throughout the day. Where as eating sugary breakfast can make you sluggish all day and not have the best brain function.
  2. Skipping meals can actually hurt you more than you think!
    • People think skipping means can help them lose weight, but it can cause binge eating to happen instead.
  3. Try to always adding a vegetable and fruit to your plate!
    • This adds fiber to your diet and helps with digestion.
  4. Try to eat fish once or twice a week!
    •  This adds omega 3s and healthy fat to your diet.
  5. Try to limit your added sugar to the daily recommended amount. Less than 10% of your daily calories!
    • Added sugar can cause your blood sugar to spike and put you at risk for obesity if constantly consuming over the daily recommended.
  6. Try to eat less salt, the daily recommendation is 2300 mg!
    •  Eating lower sodium can help your heart health and kidney function.
  7. Be active!
    •  This can help lower your risk of chronic disease and improve sleep and mood.
  8.  Drink lots of water!
    • Your body needs fluid to function appropriately by flushing waste, helping kidney function and transporting nutrients throughout the body.
