Community-Based Programs May Help Prevent Childhood Obesity
With easy access to processed foods, and limited time for
parents to create healthy meals, child obesity is becoming an epidemic in the
United States. This article discusses the need for more comprehensive
interventions in regard to fighting and preventing childhood obesity. In a
study done by John Hopkins, community based approaches need to be utilized.
Studies are showing that the best approach to stopping childhood obesity is
through school based education at middle school age or younger. However,
results can be even better when these programs are utilized along with programs
in child care situations and education at home.
In addition to this article, John Hopkins put together “Perspectives
on Childhood Obesity Prevention: Recommendations from Public Health Research
and Practice”. This is a comprehensive informational source that discusses
where childhood obesity is found most commonly, why, and how it can be
prevented. This source can be found at http://www.jhsph.edu/research/centers-and-institutes/johns-hopkins-center-for-a-livable-future/_pdf/research/clf_reports/childhoodobesity.pdf.
It also gives direct recommendations in regard to nutrition education and
physical therapy to prevent obesity in children.
This is very important information for dietitians that may
have a large childhood obesity rate in their area and are not sure where to
start. This article directs them to the invaluable link above that can really
get the dietitian on the right track to correct the problem.
