Organic and local food preference among college students
The growing trend of organic and local food options is strong among college students. A survey shows that more than half of college students consume organic and local foods (Haselden, King, McCurry, Butler, & Koszewski, 2017). This survey also identified that students more often consumed local and organic products when they were purchased or prepared by others. More than 80% of survey participants identified high cost as a barrier for not consuming organic and local foods (Haselden, King, McCurry, Butler, & Koszewski, 2017).
It is clear that there is a want for organic and local foods, likely due to the perception of them being healthier options. Finding a way to market these options to college students at a low cost would fill a need in the market and could be very profitable. It could also promote healthier eating behaviors among young college students.
