Potential Health Benefits of Avenanthramides of Oats

The health benefits of oats have been widely studied, focusing on the unique soluble fiber beta-glucan found in oats. This soluble fiber interferes with re-absorption of bile acid into the gut by attaching to it and allowing the body to excrete it through the urine. This action results in beta-glucan greatly reducing LDL cholesterol levels in the blood. Studies have shown that consumption of oats, even for a short period of time, can reduce total plasma cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, contributing to a healthier heart (Meydani, 2009).
The study, Potential Health Benefits of Avenanthramides of Oats (Meydani), looks at another unique health benefit of oats, their own antioxidants. Avenanthramides are phenolic compounds unique to oats that act as antipthogens, antioxidants, have anti-inflammatory, anti-itching, and vasodilating effects (Meydani, 2009). Avenanthramides with the highest antioxidant activity (Avn-C) are found in  large quantities in the outer kernel of the oat grain, which means that if you want this antioxidant in your diet consuming whole grains oats is a must (Meyani, 2009).
The recent change in high blood pressure classification from 140/90 to 130/80 has increased the demand for nutritional way to reduce blood pressure. Avenanthramides have been shown to increase nitric oxide production in the body which dilates the blood vessels and reduces blood pressure (Meydani, 2009). Incorporating more oats into the diet of Americans can help lower the number of people in the country suffering from hypertension.
