Go for Healthier Yogurt: What Yogurt is Better?

Go for Healthier Yogurt: What Yogurt is Better?

Whether it is cold outside, or a beautiful summer day the best kind of snack is a delicious and nutritious one!

The perfect snack that is both delicious and nutritious is yogurt! Yogurt has awesome nutritional value, high in protein, nutrients like calcium and potassium, as well as “good gut” bacteria to help in healthy digestion!

There are so many different yogurts out there it can be difficult to determine which ones are the better options when you aren’t sure exactly what to look for.

Don’t worry, here are some things to look for in your next grocery trip:

Low-Fat or Fat-free: Yogurts that are labeled low-fat or fat-free are made from milks that contain lower fat. This is a healthier alternative due to a lower overall fat content!

Flavored Yogurts Versus Plain: Flavored yogurts often contain higher sugar contents due to the added flavoring. A great alternative is to purchase plain yogurt and add your own natural flavoring! Some people choose to add fruit, while others uses cinnamon or even vanilla. Something to notice is all yogurts contain sugar, but that is because dairy products contain naturally occurring sugar. A way to determine if one yogurt has more sugar than another is to check the nutrition label on the back of the container!

Greek Yogurt Versus Traditional: Greek yogurt is a thicker, creamer yogurt compared to traditional yogurt, and usually has double the protein as regular yogurt! However, it may have less calcium than traditional yogurt. For this tip, pick your preference! Greek yogurt is a great way to get in some added protein, but if you aren’t a fan of the thickness compared to traditional yogurt, enjoy that instead!

Taking all these tips into consideration, yogurt can be put into smoothies, topped with fruit, nuts and granola, used as a substitute, or just eaten by itself!
