Food Allergen-Related Recalls on the Rise

Food Allergen-Related Recalls Are on the Rise

Millions of people are subject to allergic reactions which can be deadly. Without proper food labeling, these people are at risk for consuming ingredients they are allergic to. The Food and Drug Administration announces recalls for foods that are improperly labeled just as they announce recalls for contaminated food. The improperly labeled foods have "undeclared allergens" because they contain ingredients that commonly cause extreme reactions.

After an analysis of FDA recalls, it was determined that in the past year, more recalls were due to undeclared allergens than foodborne pathogens. Many may find this surprising as recalls concerning Salmonella and Listeria often make the news more frequently compared to undeclared allergen recalls. Since 2009, undeclared allergen recalls have nearly doubled, putting more and more people at risk for an allergic reaction.

While some may find the rise in recalls concerning, other experts feel that the increase is a result of better vigilance. With a greater number of people having food allergies than before, companies are more conscientious of their food production methods. And for those with allergies, more recalls can inform them of hidden allergens hopefully before rather than after a reaction. However, unknown allergens in the food system still pose a threat and as a precaution, those will allergies should be prepared for a reaction at all times.
