Supermarket dietitians are made up of energetic and
passionate individuals that counsel people in stores. In the article, “Supermarket dietitians: What
they can ado for you and your clients” by Sharon Palmer, RD, lists off some of
the services supermarket dietitians can provide. These include education in the form of
label-reading and cooking demonstration.
By creating meals in the aisles where the ingredients are found,
customers may be more apt to try the meals if they watch the recipe be made and
have the ingredients nearby. They also
promote the purchasing of produce to increase vegetable and fruit intake. Another service they help to provide is food
allergen management for those that need assistance navigating through products
for personal consumption safety. Not all services are specific to adults,
though. Teaching children about the
importance of nutrition has been an emphasis lately. Grocery tours and nutrition lessons have
become available specifically for children.
Healthy eating and behavior change needs to start at the
source-purchasing food. There is so
much impact a dietitian can make in a grocery store because of the lack of
education of a vast majority of the population.
Sometimes people just need a little nudge of encouragement to choose
fresh ingredients to make a meal themselves instead of purchasing the pre-made
meals. The dietitian having the cooking
demonstrations can help those who want to substitute out the packaged goods for
fresh ingredients but don’t have basic cooking skills. Due to the fact supermarket dietitians don’t
target one specific population, they are a great resource to help all
individuals. As mentioned, there are
many other resources that a supermarket dietitian may provide, each ultimately
promoting health and wellness while increasing credibility for registered
dietitians.
