Paleo Diet
Being in graduate school to become a Registered
Dietitian, it seems I can't go more than a few days without someone asking me a
question about the latest fad diet or the newest trend they heard about
yesterday on the Dr. Oz show. Recently, I've been asked a lot of questions
about the Paleo diet and whether it is beneficial or if it should be avoidid.
Admittedly, I had to do some research to really see
what this diet plan was all about in order to give an educational answer to
those who had asked. Basically, this diet tries to mimic how our ancestors ate
centuries ago based on the idea that our body is better suited to process some
foods over others. This diet focuses on a high intake of foods that could have
been hunted or gathered in the past which translates to a lot of protein such
as beef, chicken, and seafood and no whole grains or dairy.
Although by far not the craziest fad diet I've seen
out there, the Paleo plan still has its pros and cons. This plan of eating
ensures one gets plenty of omega-3 fatty acids, soluble fiber, and
antioxidants. It emphasizes whole foods rather than processed versions, and
encourages the consumption of food made without additives and preservatives.
The parts I question the most about this diet are
the elimination of whole grains and dairy. I understand and even commend an
avoidance of refined, processed grains, but the idea of
prohibiting whole grains in a diet
seems controversial. The elimination of dairy puts people at risk for calcium
and vitamin D deficiency. Such an emphasis on meat raises caution to me as
well.
I think the best answer to peoples’ question on whether the Paleo diet
is good or bad is more of a grey answer than a black or white approach.
Personally, I think this diet simply lends a way to a better way of thinking
about food in a wholesome, fresh, way. You must do your research and be
educated before diving in. For instance - the large amount of meat - make sure to
buy lean cuts of meat instead of the many fatty versions available. When
eliminating groups of foods such as dairy, and most carbohydrates, be sure you
are getting those essential vitamins and minerals from other sources in your
diet in order to avoid deficiency and to promote wellbeing.
